Thematic area: Quality of life, protection of the environment, tourism and health – Ecotourism and sustainable development.

Visitors to a place seek its authentic nature, not what has been degraded by human activities. Therefore the interests of tourists and the tourist industry coincide with those of the natural heritage managers in their desire to maintain nature in a non-degraded state. The strategy will be to educate future managers to evaluate whether and how a site or region can be developed to attract visitors. And the managers should be expert in planning projects taking into consideration environmental impact. A primary objective is to identify possible negative impact at an early stage so that it can be mitigated or avoided. So the term "ecotourism" implies a focus on the natural environment, which in some cases may be interpreted broadly to include economics, social and cultural effects as well as impact on the natural environment. The two aspects of environment and tourism are closely linked to an analysis of the standard of living and the potential offered by the territory, so that the visitors' demand for free-time activities, relaxation and health and body care may be satisfied by high-quality food and catering and/or thermal establishments and spas. Consequently tourism as an instrument and environment as influencing quality of life focus on the improvement of health and the exploitation of local potential in products and amenities. The careful analysis of these two aspects highlights their complementarity, which can be utilized and developed on an international scale by means of the network proposed by this project.
